The Valleys

Food Valley and Health Valley, partially established by Oost NL, are promoting the Agrofood and Life Sciences (medical technology) sectors in the Netherlands. They facilitate networking, innovations, new business and the exchange of knowledge.

Health Valley

Health Valley is a network of biomedical research institutions, product development companies and health care and service providers in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Health Valley facilitates health care innovations, largely through stimulation of economic activities in this area.

Centralized around the University Medical Center, the Radboud University and Academic Hospital St. Radboud in Nijmegen and the Technical University of Twente in Enschede, Health Valley is home to a large number of specialized research institutes and companies involved in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology. Here collaboration comes to life between companies and centers of expertise in specific medical disciplines including oncology, urology, tissue engineering, and bio informatics. Companies like Novartis Pharma, MedImmune, Vital Scientific, New Brunswick Scientific, Abbott Laboratories, Paul Hartmann, PPD Development and research institutes such as Nijmegen Center for Molecular Life Sciences, Center for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics, F.C. Donders Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging are closely working together.

The main goal of Health Valley is to transform scientific knowledge into innovative power for companies, and to strengthen the economic structure of the region.

Health Valley focuses on several areas of expertise in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology. Hospitals and institutes such as the Nijmegen Center for Molecular Life Sciences, the High Field Magnet Laboratory and the F.C. Donders Institute for Cognitive Neuroimaging are among the best in their field. In addition, the Department of Human Genetics of the University Medical Center was the world’s first to launch genetic tests based on genomic micro-arrays as a standard diagnostics tool already back in 2002, and has recently developed a micro-array containing a full genomic tiling path.

Based on the specific knowledge available in our region, the East Netherlands is especially suitable for companies active in:

  • Urology
  • Tissue Engineering
  • Oncology
  • DNA Technology / Micro-array Technology
  • Brain Imaging Technology
  • Bioinformatics
  • Nutriceuticals and food-related health products
  • Plant-based Biopharmaceuticals
  • Revalidation Technology and Orthopaedics
  • Diagnostics
  • Medical electronics and Microsystem Technologies
  • Distribution / Logistics of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies
